NCASLA Legislation Action Alert: August 2021

This week the language from the tree ordinance bill – House Bill 496 - has been added to the House budget and is moving forward toward becoming law. The House and Senate still need to agree on a final budget and the Governor would then need to sign it, but we are alarmed by this language becoming part of the budget discussion. Note, the Senate did not include this language in its budget.

Happy July! I hope you are all enjoying your summer and finding time to get out and enjoy life despite how busy we are as landscape architects. Your Executive Committee remains busy, however, having recently provided an LARE Review workshop, a sketch crawl and a hike at the North Carolina Arboretum. Currently, we are planning our NCASLA Awards and believe it or not, our next conference.

NCASLA is proud to announce and celebrate the accomplishments of two North Carolina Landscape Architects, who through their volunteer efforts and work have demonstrated a genuine commitment to the promotion and protection of the profession and advanced the profession nationally and here at home. Chuck Smith and Dr. Barrett Kays will be honored at the National Conference on Landscape Architecture in Nashville this fall. Chuck will be inducted into the ASLA Council of Fellows for service to the profession and Barrett will receive the LaGasse Medal for his work in natural resource conservancy and public spaces.

Mountain Section PARK(ing) Day Volunteers Needed

The Town of Waynesville will participate in PARK(ing) Day September 17, 2021. AIA and NCASLA are seeking volunteers to steward parking spaces in three districts:

  • Downtown

  • Frog Level

  • Hazelwood

Teams will be responsible for design, installation and removal of their parklets. Preliminary designs must be submitted to the Town no later than Friday, August 6. Designs will be installed on September 17 and removed the following Tuesday, September 21 (pending).

Thank you for Attending the Raleigh Sketch Crawl on June 9

The Summer Sketch Crawl in Downtown Raleigh was held with the sponsorship of the Barrs Recreation. Twenty attendees joined the event ranging from students to established practitioners and enjoined sketching and networking together. To see pictures from the event, check out the album on the NCASLA Facebook page titled 2021 Raleigh Sketch Crawl.

The EP Committee plans to have another Sketch Crawl event soon in the Charlotte area and a few other in-person events. Please share with us your favorites places to visit and sketch to help us develop a library for future sketch tours.

Currently the Committee is tracking HB 496 (Property Owners' Rights/Tree Ordinances).

This bill has passed the house and is sitting in the Senate rules. To oppose this Bill, the Committee has Used the IAdvocate system through ASLA National. If you see any alerts from National’s iAdvocate system, please respond or if you are not part of the IAdvocate system please join.
