This remembrance was published by the College of Design at NC State and is adapted from the nomination of Lewis Clarke for the 2016 ASLA Medal by Rodney Swink, PLA, FASLA.

Lewis Clarke, FASLA, passed away on Sunday, June 6, 2021 at the age of 94. He catalyzed the evolution of American landscape architecture for over sixty-five years as a professor at the North Carolina State University School (now College) of Design and as a visiting lecturer at numerous universities. Through nearly five decades of active practice, his contributions and achievements have been multi-faceted, award winning and historically significant.

The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) is inviting preK-12 students and educators across the country to kick off the 2021-2022 school year with DREAM BIG with Design, a one-of-a-kind, two-day virtual event.

NCASLA presents the following as the 2021 Executive Committee candidates. Voting members should have received the ballot in their email. If you did not receive your ballot, please contact membership@ncasla.org.

Is the hike difficult?

The two guided hikes will have frequent stops and last up to 1.5 hours each. The Carolina Mountain Trail is 1.2 miles long and listed as "moderate." But, over the course of 1.5 hours, “non-athletes” can enjoy it, barring they are not using a walker, wheelchair, or crutches.

NCASLA held our first ever fully virtual Conference on Landscape Architecture May 19th and 20th where we were greeted by excellent attendance and a very informative, enlightening and engaging series of speakers and an impressive collection of vendors in their virtual booths for membership to interact with. NCASLA would like to thank our event sponsors and vendors who attended for their support in a time when virtual interaction has become ubiquitous but still not the same as a traditional face-to-face conversation and networking opportunity.

Currently the NC Licensure and State Advocacy Committee has been tracking a couple of bills that have been introduced into the legislation which concerns our practice.

The first bill is House Bill 936 – Support for North Carolina Trails/Greenways. This bill will help fund Greenways and trails by providing funds to the Parks and Recreation Trust Fund. Using the iAdvocate network from ASLA, we have asked NCASLA members to write their representatives asking for their support for the bill.
