President’s Update: August 2022
by Hollie Colony, PLA, ASLA
It has been a busy two months since my last electronic missive and a lot has happened.
We hosted a successful state Advocacy Day event on June 22
We created and were able to send out and receive feedback in the form of a member survey
We sent out Save the Dates for the 2023 Southeast Regional Conference (SERC)
The Sections are planning Park(ing) Day events throughout the state
State Advocacy Day
Our State Advocacy Day was a very successful event that many of you were able to attend. We did not have any specific asks of our legislators this year, but it was great to be able to interact with them and remind them of who we are and what we do. Everyone we introduced ourselves to was offered an ice cream in the shade on one of the hottest days of the summer as well as some information on how landscape architects impact our environment and state economy. Thank you for all those who came out for the event and helped. ASLA will also be hosting a Virtual Advocacy Day on September 29.
Membership Survey
Hopefully you all were able to participate in the Membership Survey this year. We received a lot of great feedback and we look forward to continue to integrate that into our efforts this year and into next. As always, please feel free to reach out if you have any social or continuing education event ideas or would like to participate at all in our great organization!
SERC
We are extremely excited that the Southeast Regional Conference will be held in Atlanta, GA, on April 23-25, 2023, and will be hosted by the Georgia Chapter. We are currently still in the planning phase, but if you are interested in participating in planning or being a sponsor, please let us know.
ASLA Conference
While we are all excited for SERC, let us not forget about the conference in San Francisco. ASLA Fund is offering free registration to student members. To receive free registration, students are required to donate approximately 4 hours of their time helping at the conference. The registration deadline for this ends September 21!
EPC Site Tour
Our Emerging Professionals Committee will be hosting a Site Tour in Cary on August 20. They will be visiting Downtown Cary Park, Fenton Mixed-Use Development, and then ending the trip with some gelato! If you are interested in joining them on these guided tours, please check out our website to register.
Park(ing) Day
Each of our Sections are currently working through planning for Park(ing) Day 2022 on Friday, September 16. If you are interested in sponsoring an event in one of the sections, or participating, please let us know and we will put you in contact with the appropriate person.
Management Update
Most of you who have contacted us over the past couple of years have probably interacted with our association management company IMI and Sarah Gillian. Sarah and IMI play big roles in the daily operations of NCASLA and are part of why NCASLA have been as responsive and successful as we have been over the past few years. Unfortunately for us, Sarah notified us that she has found another opportunity and while we will miss her professional acumen, and her energetic personality we wish her nothing but the best with her new job.
Please continue to use the info@ncasla.org email address if you need any assistance or have any questions. The staff at IMI are still working hard to assist NCASLA and our members.
Executive Committee Update
We will not have a September Executive Committee Meeting, but I hope that we have just as much to update you on as we did this month. Have a great August and don’t forget to stay hydrated in this heat!
