Celebrate National PARK(ing) Day 2022 with a Pop-Up Park in Uptown Greenville

Press Release

GREENVILLE, NC- Greenville will join the global PARK(ing) Day movement to temporarily transform spaces for cars into places for people on Friday, September 16 from 10am – 2pm. Two parking spaces on East Fifth Street between Reade and Cotanche Streets will become a pop-up mini-park featuring a hammock for relaxing, Giant Jenga and Connect Four games, and other activities. There will be discount cards to Blackbeard Coffee Roasters, and sidewalk sales at Backdoor Skate Shop and other businesses. We welcome the public to grab coffee or lunch from a local business, shop, and stop by and enjoy a little urban retreat!

PARK(ing) Day, typically celebrated annually on the third Friday of September since 2005, was begun by San Francisco-based ecological art and design studio Rebar. This day is all about re-imagining the possibilities of the urban landscape in urban centers around the world.

“PARK(ing) Day is an opportunity for designers and community members to collaborate on temporarily transforming parking spaces into public places. Since the first event, PARK(ing) Day has been adapted to call attention to the need for more urban open space to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban habitat,” stated Sharon Rhue, Senior Landscape Architect at The East Group. “As Greenville moves into the future and continues to become a vibrant urban hub in Eastern North Carolina, we want to find opportunities like this to have fun, be creative, and more fully engage with our neighbors.”

Uptown Greenville’s PARKing Day is being organized by partners and staff from: American Society of Landscape Architects, MHAworks, The East Group, City of Greenville Recreation & Parks Department, Greenville-Pitt County Convention & Visitors Bureau (Visit Greenville, NC), Uptown Greenville, and East Carolina University Student Planners Action Network (ECU SPAN).
