President’s Update: March 2022
by Hollie Colony, PLA, ASLA
It is starting to feel a bit like spring! I hope you all have seen the announcements for the NCASLA Conference on Landscape Architecture, Conference on Confluence, Thursday May 19 – Saturday May 21st in Wilmington, NC. We are all really excited about it! If you know anyone who wants to sponsor a portion of the conference, please check out this page for all the various options!
There are also efforts under way to get ready for World Landscape Architecture Month (WLAM) and the 200-year celebration of Frederick Law Olmsted’s (FLO’s) birthday. We will be discussing various ways to celebrate WLAM as a Chapter at our monthly meeting on March 10.
ASLA has been planning the following for WLAM and with the National Association for Olmsted Parks (NAOP) for FLO’s birthday celebration:
ASLA will be running a national campaign on Instagram and are encouraging everyone people to post photos/images that express and illustrate ‘this is landscape architecture’ and use #WLAM2022.
On FLO’s actual birthday, April 26, ASLA is encouraging people to use the following, #Parks4AllPeople and #CelebrateOlmsted in their posts as well. Keep an eye out for more information as we get closer to April.
If you are interested in finding more about FLO and events you can attend, visit their website. I personally found these two events to be very exciting!
There is an effort to try and get Google to make FLO the Google Doodle of the day on April 26th. Support this by visiting this link.
The North Carolina Arboretum will be hosting a special exhibit through May 8, 2022. Visit their website for more information!
While celebrating any FLO events, please use @olmsted200. The Library of Congress is going to be recording the events so they have historical data to reference back for the 250 and 300 year celebrations.
The Historic American Landscapes Survey was not about to be left out of the FLO celebrations and are asking people to document Olmsted landscapes. Visit their website and reach out to our HALS Liaison, Mike Askin, for more information!
I’m glad March has a few more days than February because April is going to be a busy month! Now that everyone is getting pumped up about WLAM and FLO’s birthday, I’m looking forward to seeing all your posts!
