Past President's Update: November 2021

Past President’s Update: November 2021

by Courtney Landoll, PLA, LEED AP

Happy Holidays everyone! At the conclusion of the Conference on Landscape Architecture, my term as President officially ended and I passed the gavel to our new President Hollie Colony. For those of you who don’t know, Hollie is an Associate at Urban Design Partners in Charlotte and a former NCASLA Section Chair. Hollie not only brings NCASLA experience to the table, she brings compassion, dedication and a passion for the profession to the role. Please join me in welcoming Hollie to the helm!

While I will remain on the Executive Committee for the next year, I wanted to take a moment to share what we have accomplished together over the last year and what an unusual year it has been!

The Year Past: Budget

As previously mentioned, 2020 saw a sizable decline in revenue and was a deficit year. 2021 was projected to be a much smaller deficit and due many costs savings measures, we are predicting to end the year with an even smaller deficit than planned. Additionally, membership is back on uptick and numbers are close to pre-pandemic levels. Thank you to all of you who have maintained and or reinstated your membership and thank you to all of our sponsors and exhibitors for your support during this difficult time.

The Year Past: Events

  • Held continuing education webinars in January and February

  • Social media takeovers of our Instagram Account in April and May

  • A virtual conference in May

  • A hike at the North Carolina Arboretum in June

  • A sketch crawl in the Triangle in June

  • A three-day LARE Review in June

  • A movie night in both the Triangle in July

  • Celebrated Parking Day across the State in September

  • A movie night in Charlotte in October

  • And more that I am likely forgetting.

The Year Past: Awards

Unfortunately, we were not able to host our 2021 Awards in person this year, so we have deferred our celebration to our 2022 Conference. Look for an announcement of the winners to come soon and videos of individual winners to come out in the New Year.

A warm congratulations to our newest Fellow, Chuck Smith, and to Barrett Kays, FASLA, for winning the La Gasse Medal.

The Year Past: Organization Operations

This year, we really worked on fleshing out our committees and their missions. The work continues to staff the committees, provide role descriptions, and general expectations, but they are off to a great start! Looking for a way to plug in and serve? See our Volunteer page and contact manager@ncasla.org.

Thank you for the pleasure of serving you!
