Crafting the Connection to Our Resources: Master Plans that enhance and protect North Carolina’s landscapes, water, and cultural resources.
Program Description:
Crafting the Connection to Our Resources presentation is a one-hour panel discussion focusing on three projects from our NCASLA 2020 award winners. The panel is moderated by UNC Charlotte Professor of Architecture and Urban Design Deb Ryan (PLA). Deb's background as the former Chair of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Planning Commission and her experience as a scholar and practitioner with a wide range of award-winning planning projects provides her with layered insight into the design and underlying research of these distinguished projects. Award-winning panel members Include the members listed below.
These panel members and their selected projects provide us with excellent examples of how water and resource conservation can serve as the framework for innovative planning and design projects. These projects incorporate extensive data analysis, forward-thinking concepts, concise graphic representations, and comprehensive narratives that demonstrate thorough processes and final products providing multiple benefits. Ranging from a 9-acre site to a town-wide scope, the varying context of these projects helps to illustrate system-based thinking and site-specific transformations that contribute to sustainable water quality and stormwater management practices, resource preservation, and accessible public spaces for people to enjoy.

Health, Interaction, and Leadership through Design: Innovative projects that connect people, places and opportunity
Program Description:
The Health, Interaction, and Leadership through Design presentation is a one-hour panel discussion focusing on four projects from our NCASLA 2020 award winners. The panel is moderated by City of Charlotte Urban Designer Lorna Allen (PLA, ASLA). Lorna’s background and experience with a wide range of design and planning work provides her with a unique perspective on the methodology and techniques incorporated into these distinguished projects. Award-winning panel members are listed below.
Each of these panel members have made significant contributions to the realm of planning and landscape architecture in North Carolina by advancing cutting-edge designs and creating great places for people across our communities. The projects receiving awards provide practical applications of sustainable design, connections to the natural environment, innovative use of technology, and spaces that promote human interaction. The panel discussion will seek to provide an overview of the projects, the innovative approaches and techniques employed by the designers, and takeaways and lessons learned that can inform future design and planning efforts.
