This session will describe processes and products associated with a project recognized with a 2020 NCASLA Honor Award in Communications. The presentation will describe a series of documents that were created to inform and entice homeowners to adopt nature-enhancing gardening and landscaping practices in coastal North Carolina. The initial suite of templates features 11 planting designs that highlight plants that are native to the region, visually attractive, and versatile. Each template provides information to the average North Carolina coastal homeowner regarding purchasing, installing, and maintaining landscape enhancements specific to coastal-edge conditions. The format of the documents was developed to be easily viewed and shared across platforms, including web, downloadable digital PDFs, and printed flyers stocked at cooperative extension offices, retail nurseries, and each of the NC aquarium locations.

The planting templates are a product of the Coastal Landscapes Initiative (CLI), a larger, collaborative effort led by NC Sea Grant to address landscaping at every stage of the process, from planning and design to installation and management. CLI project partners come from the public and private sectors and draw on a range of North Carolina coastal landscaping expertise. The ultimate goal of the templates and overall CLI communications campaign is to foster coastal landscapes that are beautiful, affordable, functional, manageable, and environmentally friendly.
