Description:
This session will describe processes and products associated with two 2020 NCASLA award-winning projects, including the Award of Excellence in Research and an Honor Award in Analysis & Planning. Both of these projects involve the assessment and reporting of each project site’s highest and best uses related to conservation purpose, as defined by federal and state regulations and policies. The goal of the presentation is to transfer knowledge related to researching, evaluating, and communicating the benefits of responsibly conserving and managing unique and/or high-value land and water resources.
The presentation will most specifically discuss the investigations of two project sites—one in Creedmoor, NC and one in Hurt, VA—that assessed each property’s potential programmatic opportunities to generate local and regional recreation, research, and education uses. The overall goal of both projects was to support the eventual implementation of broader conservation concepts that 1) assist in protecting and conserving significant ecological characteristics and 2) benefit adjacent communities.
The presenters will discuss novel approaches to site analysis that highlight environmental, social, and economic factors related to aspects of the project sites and surrounding regions that connect site attributes with conservation purpose. Landscape planning approaches to preservation, development, and management practices and uses will be described. Emphasis will be placed on exploring options tied to each property’s existing assets and potential uses and, when available, city/town, county, state and regional programs. In total, this presentation will assist participants in understanding both existing and innovative best practices that couple regulatory requirements with long-term public benefits such as ecological and community function, health, and resilience.
